1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
One of the most beloved love stories of all time, Pride and Prejudice tells the tale of Elizabeth Bennet and the brooding, enigmatic Mr. Darcy. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century England, the novel explores themes of social class, family dynamics, and of course, love—albeit with a fair share of misunderstandings and witty repartee along the way. It’s the ultimate romance for those who appreciate sharp wit and complex characters.
“You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
You can watch the 1995 series adaptation with Colin Firth and the 2005 film adaptation with Keira Knightley on Prime Video.
2. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
A modern classic, The Notebook is a poignant love story that spans decades. Noah and Allie’s love is tested by time, distance, and societal expectations, but their bond remains unbreakable. With its sweeping emotions and heartwarming conclusion, this book is sure to have you reaching for the tissues.
“It wasn’t over, it still isn’t over!”
You can watch the movie adaptation with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams on Prime Video.
3. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
No list of great love stories would be complete without the ultimate tale of star-crossed lovers. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has been retold in countless forms, but the original play still holds its place as one of the most tragic and beautiful love stories ever written. If you’re in the mood for classic romance with an unforgettable ending, this is the one to pick up.
“But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.”

There are so many different screen adaptations of Rome and Juliet, but my favourite has to be Baz Luhrman’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996).
4. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
If you’re looking for a historical romance with a touch of adventure, Outlander is the perfect pick. The story follows Claire Randall, a 20th-century nurse who is mysteriously transported back in time to 18th-century Scotland, where she meets the passionate and charming Jamie Fraser. 9. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
For a lighthearted, quirky romance, The Rosie Project is a fantastic choice. Don Tillman, a socially awkward genetics professor, embarks on a project to find the perfect wife using a scientific survey. Enter Rosie, a free-spirited woman who doesn’t fit any of his criteria, but who might just be the woman he’s been looking for. Funny, heartfelt, and ultimately uplifting, this book is perfect for readers who want a sweet love story with a bit of humour. There is a sequel titled, The Rosie Effect.
“You can call me the luckiest guy in the world, or you can call me the happiest, but I’ve got to say, I’m both.”
10. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

For fans of passionate and tragic love stories, Wuthering Heights offers a compelling choice. The tumultuous relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine is one of the most intense and destructive love affairs in literature. Set on the windswept moors of England, this Gothic novel is full of dark romance, obsession, and longing—a must-read for those who appreciate complex, brooding characters.
“Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
There are a number of different screen adaptations of Wuthering Heights, but my favourite is the 1994 film starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.
13. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Speaking of Brontës, Jane Eyre is a timeless classic that tells the story of an orphaned girl who becomes a governess at the mysterious Thornfield Hall, where she meets the brooding and enigmatic Mr. Rochester. Their deep and complex love story is marked by passion, secrets, and societal challenges. Jane Eyre is an enduring tale of love, independence, and personal growth, making it perfect for anyone who appreciates gothic romance with a strong and resilient heroine.
