If you’re planning a trip to the region, here’s a detailed guide to the best things to do in Skopje, Macedonia.
After spending two months here in the capital, I can safely say that Skopje is one of Europe’s most underrated cities.
Whether you’re wandering through Ottoman-era bazaars, gazing at monumental statues, or hiking up into the nearby mountains, Skopje has a lot to offer.

1. Wander Around Macedonia Square
The heart of Skopje is Macedonia Square, a massive public space dominated by the iconic “Warrior on a Horse” statue, which represents Alexander the Great.

The square is surrounded by neoclassical-style buildings, fountains, and plenty of cafes where you can stop for a coffee and soak up the atmosphere.
Tip: To cover the main sites of the Skopje city centre and get some context from a local along the way, I highly recommend taking a walking tour.
We took this free walking tour and our guide was amazing. We made sure to tip generously at the end.
2. Cross the Stone Bridge
From Macedonia Square, walk across the Stone Bridge, one of Skopje’s most recognisable landmarks. This historic bridge, dating back to the 15th century, connects the modern part of the city with the Old Bazaar.

This bridge isn’t just a practical crossing—it’s a cultural symbol that has witnessed centuries of history, invasions, and trade.
3. Explore the Old Bazaar
Skopje’s Old Bazaar (Čaršija) is one of the largest and best-preserved bazaars in the Balkans, with roots going back to Ottoman times.

Narrow cobblestone streets are lined with shops selling traditional crafts, jewelry, rugs, and antiques.
Stop at a family-run restaurant or café for Macedonian specialties like čevapi (grilled meat), ajvar (pepper spread), or a strong Turkish coffee.

Planning a trip to Macedonia?
Here’s what you need to know:
PACKING: Skopje reaches temperatures of 40+ degrees Celsius in the summer, so pack sun-cream and after-sun, mosquito repellent, tiger balm (for mosquito bite relief), a filter bottle (drinking tap water is not recommended), and a multi-way travel adaptor (Thailand uses Type F). And, of course, a good book.
TAXIS: Download the WIZI app for taxis, which is usually cheaper than haggling with local taxi drivers. Unfortunately, the app is clunky. Wolt delivery is available for food and grocery delivery.
SIM: I got a pre-paid SIM with Telekom, but in hindsight, I don’t think this was any better value than buying a package with Airalo, which I use for eSIMs. However, it was useful having a local number.
WHERE TO STAY: Booking.com offers the best prices, while Airbnb offers comfort if you’re planning a longer stay.
LOCAL HELP: For specific questions, I recommend the Facebook groups Expats, Foreigners & Tourists in Macedonia (Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola…) and Skopje Expats Only. English is widely and well spoken in Skopje.
4. Climb to Skopje Fortress (Kale)
Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the Skopje Fortress (Kale) offers panoramic views of the capital and the Vardar River. The fortress dates back to the 6th century, though most of what remains is from Ottoman times.

While much of the fortress is in ruins, walking along its ancient walls and towers is a must for anyone interested in history—or simply looking for a great photo opportunity. Sunset is an especially magical time to visit.
5. Visit the Mother Teresa Memorial House
Did you know Skopje is the birthplace of Mother Teresa? The Mother Teresa Memorial House is dedicated to the Nobel Peace Prize winner, offering an inspiring look at her life and humanitarian work.

The museum features personal belongings, photographs, and letters, and it’s built on the site of the church where she was baptized.

6. Discover the City’s Quirky Statues and Monuments
Skopje is often nicknamed “the city of statues” because of its abundance of monuments.
As part of the controversial Skopje 2014 project, the city added dozens of statues, fountains, and neoclassical facades.

While opinions on the project are mixed (the money could definitely be better used elsewhere), exploring the “open-air museum” of Skopje is a unique experience.
7. Walk Along the Vardar River
The Vardar River runs through the heart of Skopje, and both sides are lined with walking paths, cafes, and green spaces. The riverside is perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially in the evening.

Keep an eye out for the quirky “replica ships” docked along the river, which now house restaurants and bars. Love it or hate it, it’s all part of Skopje’s unusual charm.
8. Explore Museums and Art Galleries
If you’re a culture lover, Skopje has plenty of museums worth exploring:
- Museum of the Macedonian Struggle – A modern and interactive museum detailing the country’s turbulent history.
- Museum of Contemporary Art – Showcasing works from Macedonian and international artists.
- Archaeological Museum of Macedonia – Home to artifacts from the Neolithic era through to the Ottoman period.

These museums provide deeper context into the city’s history and cultural identity.
I found the Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia, which commemorates the 7,148 Macedonian jews who were deported to concentration camps (there were no survivors) particularly poignant.
9. Take a Day Trip to Matka Canyon
Just a 30-minute drive from Skopje, Matka Canyon is the perfect escape from the city, offering a mix of adventure and relaxation.

Here, you can hike along scenic trails, take a boat ride through the emerald-green waters, and explore Vrelo Cave, one of the world’s deepest underwater caves.

Whether you’re into kayaking, photography, or simply enjoying nature, Matka Canyon is a must-do.

10. Ride the Cable Car to Mount Vodno
For breathtaking views of Skopje, head up Mount Vodno. You can hike or take the cable car to the top, where you’ll find the Millennium Cross, one of the largest crosses in the world.

The panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains are spectacular, making it one of the best outdoor things to do in Skopje, Macedonia.

11. Sample Macedonian Cuisine
No trip to Skopje is complete without indulging in the local food. Macedonian cuisine is hearty, flavourful, and heavily influenced by Mediterranean and Balkan traditions.

Some dishes to try:
- Shopska Salad – Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and white cheese.
- Tavče Gravče – Baked beans in a clay pot, a national dish.
- Burek – Flaky pastry filled with cheese, meat, or spinach.
Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or rakija, a strong fruit brandy beloved across the Balkans.
12. Enjoy Skopje’s Nightlife
Skopje has a surprisingly lively nightlife scene. From riverside bars to rooftop clubs, you’ll find plenty of options for a night out. I also found loads of places to dance tango, bachata, and salsa, which was surprising!
The Debar Maalo neighbourhood is popular for trendy bars, live music venues, and cosy pubs. If you want a more relaxed evening, try a hookah lounge in the Old Bazaar or a wine bar near Macedonia Square.
One of my favourite places for cocktails (and surprisingly good Mexican food!) was Amigos. Try the Margaritas and Palomas.
13. Take a Day Trip to Kosovo
One of the most unique aspects of visiting Skopje is how close it is to another fascinating country—Kosovo.
Just a 90-minute drive north, you can cross the border and explore Pristina, the capital, or the beautiful Ottoman town of Prizren.

Pristina offers quirky cafes, modern street art, and landmarks like the striking National Library, while Prizren charms visitors with its riverside setting, stone bridges, and historic mosques.

Organised day tours run from Skopje, making it easy to experience two Balkan countries in one trip. This is the day trip we took:
I really enjoyed this day trip to Kosovo and actually wished I had more time, especially in Pristina (though most in my tour group preferred Prizren). So if you can, spend a few days or more there.
14. Bookshop Safari
Nomad Book Club
North Macedonia is the Nomad Book Club pick for August 2025, where we explore a new country or region each month through books set in that place. Sign up to the newsletter to join the club and follow along on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for updates.
If, like me, you love browsing local bookstores and maybe even picking up a book as a souvenir, this activity offers a great way to connect with Skopje’s cultural side.

My top picks are Akademska Kniga and the adjoining Bar Shakespeare, and Literatura.mk in Diamond Mall (which has an amazing food and coffee menu).

Where to Go Beyond Skopje
While Skopje offers plenty to keep you busy, North Macedonia is full of treasures worth exploring:
Tip: Macedonia is a small country, and the following destinations can be reached within a few hours, so you can always use Skopje as your base and do day trips or overnight trips.
Ohrid
Often called the “Pearl of the Balkans,” Ohrid is a UNESCO-listed lakeside town famous for its churches, beaches, and crystal-clear waters.
Bitola
Bitola is a historic city with Ottoman architecture, Roman ruins at Heraclea Lyncestis, and a vibrant café culture.
Mavrovo National Park
A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, Mavrovo National Park offers skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
Bulgaria & Albania
Macedonia neighbours Bulgaria and Albania. You can take a trip to Sofia, Tirana, or the Albanian Riviera, or factor in your next travel destination based on what is close by.
Renting a Car
If you want to explore Macedonia at your own pace, I recommend renting a car, which definitely works out cheaper than day trips and private transfers (and quicker than figuring out the unreliable bus timetable).
Note that for Bulgaria, Albania, and Kosovo, you need to pay an extra fee for each border crossing day, so it may work out better value to do the bus or a private tour for those.
Final Thoughts: Why Visit Skopje?
Skopje may not be on everyone’s travel radar, but that’s why I loved it. The city is quirky, diverse, and full of contrasts—from medieval bazaars to modern monuments, from sacred sites to vibrant nightlife.

Whether you’re here for a few days or stopping by as part of a Balkan road trip, you’ll find plenty of unique things to do in Skopje, Macedonia. I found it particularly convenient as a digital nomad.
