Pera Palace Hotel Review: Like Stepping into a Novel

Some hotels feel like mere places to sleep; others feel like chapters in a book. The Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul belongs firmly to the latter.

From the moment I pushed through its revolving doors, I felt as though I’d wandered into a historical novel, the kind where you expect to catch Agatha Christie scribbling notes in the corner or Ernest Hemingway ordering a drink at the bar (because they actually did!).

Here’s everything you need to know about a stay at the literary Pera Palace in Istanbul, as well as my personal bookish hotel review:

A Literary Legacy

As an avid reader, I knew before arriving that Pera Palace was more than just a luxury hotel. It’s a destination in itself.

Built in 1892 to host passengers of the Orient Express, its guest list reads like the index of a classic library: Christie, Hemingway, Hitchcock, and Atatürk.

Room 411, where Christie is said to have written Murder on the Orient Express, is a pilgrimage spot for book lovers.

Walking its corridors, you get a sense of how many stories—real and fictional—have been connected to this hotel. Pera Palace is a museum hotel

First Impressions

The entrance sets the tone with revolving doors, chandeliers, marble floors, and high ceilings. The lobby is elegant and formal, like most of the spaces throughout the hotel.

Designed by French-Ottoman architect Alexander Vallaury, the Pera Palace, the hotel combines neoclassical, art nouveau and oriental styles.

The vibe is classic and polished, leaning into the hotel’s rich history, mixing traditional European and Ottoman influences for example, the marble bathrooms in the rooms emulate the look and feel of a hammam).

Bonus: Pera Palace is also within walking distance of Minoa Pera, one of the most beautiful bookshops in Istanbul, which also houses a cafe and bar (and resident cats)!

Service

The staff seems to understand that visitors aren’t just here for comfort—they’re here for atmosphere, and they deliver it beautifully.

Even though I may not be the typical clientele and I was only staying for one night, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

It honestly felt like I’d stepped back into time (or into the pages of a novel) to become a wealthy socialite/world-famous detective/runaway member of the aristocracy.

Rooms

The rooms have been updated with modern amenities, but they retain period details that connect back to the hotel’s legacy. Expect wooden floors, patterned rugs, and classic furnishings.

Some rooms are more spacious than others, and those with a balcony offer lovely views over the Golden Horn. While not high-tech or ultra-modern, there are modern amenities such as televisions and coffee machines.

I stayed in the Deluxe Pera Side Room (King). The bed was absolutely beautiful and so comfortable to sleep in, I didn’t want to leave! Turndown service was also a lovely traditional touch in keeping with the vibe.

In the bathroom, there was a luxurious clawfoot bathtub, though I believe most of these room types feature a shower instead (maybe I was secretly upgraded?).

Special Rooms

As mentioned above, Room 411 is dedicated to Agatha Christie, but there are other suites and rooms named for famous Pera Palace guests:

There’s the Alfred Hitchcock Suite, the Mata Hari Suite, the Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy Room, the Pierre Loti Suite, the Ernest Hemingway Suite and Greta Garbo Corner Room, as well as a museum room dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (see below).

Dining

The restaurants, bars and lively atmosphere of Istiklal Avenue is only a few minutes away, butif you’d rather stay in, the Pera Palace has plenty of dining options to choose from:

Agatha Restaurant

A refined dining space serving a mix of Turkish and international cuisine in an elegant, historic setting. Breakfast is here in the mornings.

Kubbeli Lounge

Famous for its stained-glass domes, this lounge is best known for afternoon tea and a relaxed, timeless atmosphere.

Patisserie de Pera

An ornate café offering freshly baked pastries, cakes, and coffee in a Parisian-inspired style. It looks like something straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. Think macaroons, gateaux and homemade chocolates!

Orient Bar

A classic bar with a vintage feel, once frequented by literary and cultural icons, perfect for cocktails or a quiet drink.

Of course, I sat here with a cocktail (aptly named Midnight at the Pera Palace, after the TV series) and read my book.

Orient Terrace

An outdoor terrace overlooking the Golden Horn, ideal for al fresco dining and evening drinks with a view.

Facilities

Pera Palace has a small indoor pool, spa, and fitness centre. The spa area also includes a steam/sauna and hammam, which feels incredible after a long day of walking and sightseeing.

Atatürk Museum Room

Another interesting feature of the hotel is the Atatürk Museum Room, Room 101.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Türkiye, stayed and hosted guests in this room. It’s said that many significant decisions and moments in Turkish history took place here.

My Pera Palace Review

For me, staying at the Pera Palace was less like checking into a hotel and more like joining a novel mid-chapter. You stay here for character and I felt like I embodied a character right out of a book during my stay!

If you’re the kind of traveller who packs books before clothes, or who believes a city is best experienced through both history and imagination, this hotel is sure to thrill you.

Even if you’re not a bibliophile, Pera Palace still enchants. Its location in Beyoğlu places you within walking distance of Istanbul’s cultural heart, and the classic five-star experience is a worthwhile indulgence.

Pricing

I was already staying in Istanbul for a festival and booked a last-minute one-night stay at the Pera Palace via Booking.com for a 30% discounted price of TRY7,282.02 (around USD175/GBP130/EUR50), which is really reasonable for a five-star hotel!

I stayed in the Deluxe Pera Side Room (King) and the stay included breakfast, coffee and tea, and WiFi.

If you’re looking for a literary hotel in Istanbul for a more affordable price, I recommend the quirky Hotel Poem, which is walking distance to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia.

Would I stay again? Absolutely. In fact, I’m already daydreaming about returning with a stack of vintage mysteries in my suitcase.

Have you stayed at the Pera Palace or do you plan to? Let me know in the comments below.

Travel Essentials

Here are the websites and services I personally use and recommend.

FLIGHTS: The best deals can be found on Skyscanner, Google Flights and Kiwi (learn more about Kiwi travel hacking here).

TRAVEL INSURANCE: I recommend World Nomads for travel insurance because you can purchase once you’re already overseas and you can easily extend your policy. For digital nomads, I recommend and personally use Genki (learn more about Genki digital nomad health insurance here).

E-SIM: For travel in Europe, I use an e-sim with GoMobile, which is a provider based in Malta, but you need to be there to set it up.

ACCOMMODATION: I use Booking.com for hotels and Airbnb for apartments. For Colivings, I usually book privately, but Coliving.com is a good place to start.

THINGS TO DO: I use Viator or Get Your Guide for booking day trips, city tours and other activities, though I often check reviews on TripAdvisor too.

  1. What a beautifully written review, Amy! You’ve captured the magic of the Pera Palace so well — I could almost picture Agatha Christie herself sitting in Room 411 with pen in hand. I love how you’ve woven the hotel’s literary history into your impressions; it really does sound like stepping straight into a storybook.

  2. Staying in an Agatha Christie themed room in the Pera Palace Hotel while in Istanbul sounds fabulous (or even staying in another room and visiting the Agatha Restaurant). I’ve always been a fan of her work!

    1. Right? So cool! There’s also an “Orient Express” restaurant at the train station, but it didn’t look anywhere near as atmospheric.

  3. I LOVE hotels with a history. And you have found one in one of the most historic cities in the world. Everything about this sounds magical.

    1. Same! A modern Airbnb is all well and good for convenience, but for a vacation, I love the idea of staying somewhere with a history in itself.

  4. I love hI appreciate hotels that have unique charm, and Pera Palace is certainly one of them. It’s unfortunate that I wasn’t aware of it sooner, but I will remember it for my next visit to Istanbul. Thank you for the recommendation!

  5. I love staying in historic hotels like this. I actually heard about the series and assumed it was about a fictional hotel.

  6. I think this is very neat and I would love to stay there. Price is reasonable able too considering its history and a fan favorite. If I get the opportunity to be in the area i will definitely stay there. Thanks for the infi
